The West Virginia Fund for Law in the Public Interest is a nonprofit organization that supports fellowships for WVU College of Law students at public interest organizations throughout the state. Fellowships provide invaluable assistance to West Virginia public interest organizations while providing students with unparalleled learning experiences.
Founded in 1987, the organization has· sponsored hundreds offellows in support of its mission to enhance the quality of legal services for low-income West Virginians, including children, the elderly, and victims of domestic violence. The Fund helps law students achieve a deeper appreciation for the importance of public interest work.

|
|
Summer 2024 PIA Fellows helped those in need while gaining valuable legal work experience in areas such as children’s advocacy, civil rights, consumer matters, disability rights, and land use and conservation.
|

Jack Daryl Swiney, the 2023 PIA Post-Graduate Fellow, has chosen to work at the Monongalia County Public Defender Office, serving as defense counsel for indigent criminal defendants. Jack has spent time shadowing attorneys, performing research, preparing motions, and much more. Jack has already been assigned cases and is excited to serve the people of the 17th Judicial Circuit of West Virginia.
Upon completion of his Fellowship, Jack intends to remain at the Monongalia County Public Defender Office. In his free time, Jack focuses his time serving as a Corporate Board Member for HOBY West Virginia—a youth leadership organization which empowers the next generation to become agents of change in their communities.

Senior Partner – $2375: Funds half of a fellowship
Partner – $1187: Funds quarter of a fellowship
Associate – $500: When you donate at this level or higher, you are eligible for a 50% West Virginia State Tax Credit made possible by the West Virginia Neighborhood Development Program.
